Hunter Education & Firearm Safety Training

August Class, First Night

August 3, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Tomorrow, before any departing parents, we will be spending the first part of class making sure everyone has their registration papers filled out correctly.  I think we have filled the remaining spots so checking everyone in may run into the beginning of our class time - show up a little early if you can!

Also before parents depart, we will introduce the new website and touch on the waiver release form for the website.  I will make a reminder to supply me with a self-addressed stamped envelope (this is so I can send out the student’s certification card after the completion of the course) and a copy of each student’s birth certificate (so I can double check spellings of names and dates of birth before submitting my class roster to the DNR).

Then class begins with the movie The Last Shot.  This is to bring everyone in attendence into the correct mindset.  We are here to discuss the serious issues of responsible, involved, safe, and knowledgeable hunters and shooters.

After the movie we will discuss how the course will proceed, including materials and assignments, and some housekeeping reminders.  For example, we are guests of the Bemidji Trap & Skeet Club, and we should treat this lovely facility like it is our home.

Then we will begin with some small group and class brainstorming and discussion about why hunter education and firearm safety training exists and its purpose.  We will touch on the goals of this class and how we, as individual hunters and shooters, should seek to achieve them.

The last portion of class will be spent introducing firearms and the parts of a firearm.  We will discuss assignments for next time (watch for another post under “Assignments” for the assignment reminder), and what type of firearm you may bring to class for the rest of the course and how to bring it.
