August Class Range Night Weather Advisory!

August 21, 2008 · Leave a Comment

There is a weather advisory for our area today:  AccuWeather.com

URGENT – WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GRAND FORKS ND
1017 AM CDT THU AUG 21 2008

…STRONG SOUTHERLY WINDS TODAY INTO THIS EVENING OVER EASTERN NORTH
DAKOTA AND WESTERN MINNESOTA…

.A COLD FRONT WILL MOVE INTO CENTRAL NORTH DAKOTA TODAY WITH
GUSTY SOUTHERLY WINDS OUT AHEAD OF IT. SOUTH WINDS WILL BE
SUSTAINED IN THE 25 TO 35 MPH RANGE WITH A FEW GUSTS TO 45 MPH
OVER EASTERN NORTH DAKOTA INTO WESTERN MINNESOTA.

The wind may affect the marksmanship of our shooting, but we are only interested in demonstrations of safety with firearms tonight at the range.  So, other than some extra precautions, we should be good to go for tonight.  Remember to bring anything you may need as far as clothing.  Not only will we be kneeling, sitting and laying in the dirt, but with the wind there may be some dirt flying around as well.  We may have to forego the Treestand Activity if the wind presents too much of a hazard for climbing into a stand.  The good news is the wind should keep the bugs down!  See you all tonight!

The June Class takes part in the Live-Fire and Treestand Activities at Range Night

The June Class takes part in the Live-Fire and Treestand Activities at Range Night

Everyone did a fantastic job tonight on the test.  Congratulations to Kevin for the best test score!  Thank you for the excellent job on all of the survival kit presentations, and congratulations to Noah, Spencer, and Annika for best survival kits!  This class also produced the best group of essays as a class, which made it difficult to choose the best one; congratulations to Bobby and Sara, the best essay winners!

Everybody was doing a fabulous job in the hands-on portion of class as well.  Everyone looks comfortable displaying all of the field carries and shooting positions, and you are doing a fine job of passing/courteously accepting a firearm.

You are all ready for responsible, knowledgeable, and safe firearms handling at the range.  Remember that Range Night is the most important part of the Firearm Safety Certification; you will be expected to demonstrate your knowledge of responsible and safe firearms handling at all times.  I want to reassure anyone who may be nervous for Thursday to simply continue practicing all of the things we have discussed in class and you will do a fantastic job.

With the cool temperatures in the evening hours, the likelihood of bugs, and all of the shooting we will be doing Thursday, it may be wise to dress in layers like you learned about in the Personal Preparedness chapter of the Student Manual.  Remember to wear a sturdy or thick shirt and light jacket for a little padding from the firearm recoil.

More information to come before Thursday – check back!

August Class, First Night

August 3, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Tomorrow, before any departing parents, we will be spending the first part of class making sure everyone has their registration papers filled out correctly.  I think we have filled the remaining spots so checking everyone in may run into the beginning of our class time - show up a little early if you can!

Also before parents depart, we will introduce the new website and touch on the waiver release form for the website.  I will make a reminder to supply me with a self-addressed stamped envelope (this is so I can send out the student’s certification card after the completion of the course) and a copy of each student’s birth certificate (so I can double check spellings of names and dates of birth before submitting my class roster to the DNR).

Then class begins with the movie The Last Shot.  This is to bring everyone in attendence into the correct mindset.  We are here to discuss the serious issues of responsible, involved, safe, and knowledgeable hunters and shooters.

After the movie we will discuss how the course will proceed, including materials and assignments, and some housekeeping reminders.  For example, we are guests of the Bemidji Trap & Skeet Club, and we should treat this lovely facility like it is our home.

Then we will begin with some small group and class brainstorming and discussion about why hunter education and firearm safety training exists and its purpose.  We will touch on the goals of this class and how we, as individual hunters and shooters, should seek to achieve them.

The last portion of class will be spent introducing firearms and the parts of a firearm.  We will discuss assignments for next time (watch for another post under “Assignments” for the assignment reminder), and what type of firearm you may bring to class for the rest of the course and how to bring it.

June Class 2008

June Class 2008

Congratulations to the June Class of 2008 for a job well done!

Last night 29 excellent students became the latest Firearm Safety Training certified students through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources sponsored courses.

A special congratulations to the following students for their exemplary efforts:

  • Best Essay: Morgan Sundrud
  • Best Survival Kit: Leif Erickson
  • Best Written Test Score: Matt Serratore

After Minnesota’s newest hunters showed off their Survival Kits, they successfully demonstrated responsible, safe, and knowledgeable actions in the Field Test and the Live-Fire Rimfire Test as well as in the Treestand Safety Demonstration and during the Shotgun Trap Range Live-Fire.  The skills displayed by this group of students on the rimfire, shotgun, treestand and field test portions of Range Night proved this class will be ready for a successful and safe 2008 hunting season!

Good luck to all the graduates on their hunting, shooting, and outdoors adventures!

Permission Skits

Permission Skits

Everyone did a fantastic job tonight on the test.  All passed with flying colors.  Congratulations to Matt Serratore for the best test score!  Thank you for the excellent job on all of the “Asking for Permission to Hunt Private Land” skit presentations!

Everybody was doing a fabulous job in the hands-on portion of class as well.  Everyone looks comfortable displaying all of the field carries and shooting positions, and you are doing a fine job of passing/courteously accepting a firearm.

I regret that we did not have time to get to the Survival Kits, but this will give you extra time to work on them and we will look at all of them on Thursday night at the range.  So don’t forget to bring them with you again.  I will post a tentative plan for the Range here before Thursday to let you know the intended schedule for the evening.

You are all ready for responsible, knowledgeable, and safe firearms handling at the range.  I want to reassure anyone who may be nervous for Thursday to simply continue practicing all of the things we have discussed in class and you will do a fantastic job.
