Hunter’s Code of Ethics
- I will obey the rules of safe firearms handling, require it from those in my party, and encourage others to do so.
- I will obey game laws and regulations and insist that my companions do so as well.
- I will consider myself an invited guest of the landowner and get their permission before using their land.
- I will acquire good marksmanship and hunting skills to ensure clean, sportsmanlike skills.
- I will support conservation efforts to ensure hunting in future years.
- I will help other hunters learn skills and attitudes necessary to allow them to become true sportsmen or sportswomen.

10 Commandments of Safe Firearm Handling
- Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
- Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
- Identify your target and what is beyond it.
- Ensure the firearm and ammunition are in good working condition and that only the correct ammunition is used.
- Store firearms and ammunition separately under lock and key, and use trigger locks.
- Always keep the action open except when actually hunting or preparing to shoot and always keep your finger off the triger except when firing.
- Never point a firearm at anything you do not want to shoot. Avoid all horseplay with a firearm.
- Never climb a fence, tree, stand, or jump a ditch without unloading your firearm.
- Never shoot at a flat hard surface or water.
- Avoid alcohol and other drugs before or during hunting and shooting.

The three basic rules of safe firearms handling are:
- Treat every firearm as if it is loaded!
- When you pick up a firearm, keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times;
- Make sure you know where the safety is and that it is on;
- Open the action to visibly and/or physically check that the firearm is not loaded and the magazine is empty.
- Muzzle control!
- ALWAYS keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction;
- Never point the muzzle at anything you do not intend to shoot.
- Identify your target and what is beyond it.
- Identify your safe zone of fire prior to beginning each hunt or phase of the hunt;
- Never shoot at a skylined target or a target in front of a ricocheting surface like pavement, steel, rock, or water;
- Never put your finger on the trigger until you have determined that you have a safe and quality shot.
